The sky’s the limit so sit back, relax and enjoy the conversation! It’s a good piece of equipment with a lot of potential but the issue with the mouth noises/clicks is annoying and frustrating to deal with.Ĭheck out The David & Ronald Show Podcast, a podcast of casual & engaging conversations, open dialogue & discussions, personal stories & life experiences and much more.

Hopefully, this can be addressed in a firmware update and perhaps Zoom will add noise gate and improve the audio filtering capabilities on the PodTrak P8 so there’s less to be done in post production. I’ve tried tweaking the settings but it’s hard achieving a perfect balance between cleaning up all the mouth noises/clicks while simultaneously preserving the quality of the original audio. I even hear static in portions of the recording after the mouth de-click has been applied. Usually, I’ll turn to Izotope RX 8 Standard (a $400 piece of software) to help clean up the audio and filter out the mouth noises/clicks using the mouth de-click option and while it does a fairly good job, there’s a certain loss of quality in the final audio recording which I’m not fond of.

I’ve tried removing the mouth noises/clicks in Logic Pro X using the built-in tools sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. This is probably due to the built-in noise gate and related filtering available on the RODECaster Pro which in turn makes the audio quality of recordings on the RODECaster Pro sound consistently better than on the Zoom PodTrak P8, in my opinion. I haven’t run into this issue or it hasn’t been noticeable when recording on the RODECaster Pro. The mouth noises/clicks have been the most annoying issue on audio tracks to clean up. In addition, the PodTrak P8 picks up mouth noises/clicks when speaking which must be filtered out in post-production otherwise, it’s very distracting. I also need to set the gains much lower to avoid picking up extraneous sounds. On the RODECaster Pro, I can record using a Rode PodMic without any pop-filter or microphone muff and I have no issues with plosives however, on the PodTrak P8, whether I use a Zoom mic or the Rode Procaster mic, I need a pop-filter or microphone muff to prevent plosives. Not necessarily deal breakers and I can workaround most, but the lack of noise gate on the PodTrak P8 has been most problematic for me.

$50) to add Bluetooth support, the faders for audio level control don’t feel as granular as the RODECaster Pro, while you can export tracks in MP3 format, you must convert them to MP3 on the PodTrak P8 first and it only converts the combined track to MP3 format for export not all the individual tracks from the multi-track recording and unlike the RODECaster Pro, the PodTrak P8 does not have an actual built-in noise gate.

That said, the PodTrak P8 does have some downsides.
USING IZOTOPE RX 6 FOR PODCAST PORTABLE
While the PodTrak P8 and RODECaster Pro have many similarities (including support for multi-track recording), I do like the fact that the PodTrak P8 offers a smaller form factor, can operate on batteries (including AA, rechargeable or portable batteries) making it ultra-portable, offers six audio inputs vs the four on the RODECaster Pro (if you need the additional audio inputs), has a simple file transfer mode (mount drive, copy & paste), exported audio tracks are louder and don’t need a boost in post (exported tracks on the RODECaster Pro are really low) and the PodTrak P8 comes in at $100 less than the RODECaster Pro.
